virginia is for haters?
I just read this article about a gay rights group calling for a boycott of the state of Virginia because it banned gay marriage or any other marriage-like arrangements. I have no problem with this kind of political strategy, or the political belief behind it, but there seems to be a serious problem with execution here. Thinking back to the boycotts that were successful (MLK and buses comes most quickly to mind), they were so much based on and massive organizational effort that made the boycott a viable political tool. If you can’t deliver (and no offense to these activists, but I doubt they’ve organized a force that really threatens Virginia’s well being) what’s the point? To me, this is just another example of a political tool that used to be real, that used to build communities and participation, that was built with the kind of passion that has now left our politics, being turned into another excuse to write a press release. It’s all PR now, welcome to America.
