good politics or good conscience?
A fascinating announcement yesterday from Democratic Senator Mark Dayton that he won’t be seeking reelection. It’s not just interesting that he’s stepping down, but why:
“I do not believe that I am the best candidate to lead the party to victory next year,” Dayton told reporters on a conference call. “I cannot stand to do the constant fund raising necessary to wage a successful campaign, and I cannot be an effective senator while also being a nearly full-time candidate.”
So here’s the problem we have: his antipathy toward fund-raising and his seriousness about his job makes him exactly the kind of Senator we want to have.
