On being of the Left.

It’s one thing to say you’re of the Left and believe that society should be more compassionate.  It’s quite another to try to apply those principles to your every day life and work.  Especially if you work in the media where, let’s be honest, giving people the benefit of the doubt and not falling back on stereotypes and neat dehumanizing story lines takes work.

Online, no one does that better than Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine.  His show isn’t explicitly political — Smooth’s expertise is in hip hop — but, as he explains below, it’s imbued with a deep humanism.  His example is one that should be followed, and his approach stands in stark contrast to those I often see in the self-proclaimed “online Left.”
